The Solarmature is a standalone solar light and looks like an ordinary floor lamp. The lamp can be used as a garden light or an ambient light. The armature combines the best of two worlds; the cosy atmosphere of the living room with the freedom and feelings of nature. The solar cells are integrated within the product as part of the lampshade and are designed as a full part of the armature instead of an add-on.
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Most solar lamps available on the market aren't real solar lamps. Most lights are just standard armatures with solar cells glued to it. The concept of the Solarmature was based on this simple observation. Therefore the mission for the design was clear: integrate the solar cells as a true part of the armature rather than being an add-on. The outcome is just as surprisingly simple as smart: an archetypical table lamp where the solar cells are the lamp shade. The Solarmature is outdoor portable LED light and should be charged outside, but can be used indoors as well. The Solarmature brings the living room to the outdoors and vice versa, the best of both worlds.
Most of my project started from an 'emotional' perspective. Sometimes it's about function, this time it was a feeling, but it's always about people and bringing them together. The Solarmature was made so that people could gather around the light in a warm summer eve. These moodboards were used for the design.
From sketch to engineering to the first mockup.
DUTCH DESIGN WEEK
My design was exposed during 'Design United' at the Dutch Design Week in 2006. Design United was the common exhibition of the Industrial Design departments of the three technical Universities of the Netherlands. This was the first time that my project was selected for this exposition.
